‘Be very.’ Brian Collins shares rule 98 from his 101 design rules
The designer and business owner dips into the musings and principles that have defined his career.
Brian Collins, the chief creative officer and co-founder of design consultancy Collins, has had a long career in design and, before that, advertising, which led him to share pearls of wisdom, which he distilled into a compendium of design rules.
Collins will be mining the design rules archive and expanding on select examples to give The Drum’s readers and viewers his best insights and reflections.

The video above sees him encourage those working in the industry to stand for something, whatever that is, and to be memorable – although this shouldn’t be an affectation, but a genuine expression, as Collins explains.
You’ll be hearing a lot more from Collins as we move into the new year and he launches his Designism column with us. Collins will draw on all his experience in a far-reaching and regular monthly contribution.

Designism, as Collins sees it, will be a “benevolent force for change.” The origins of the title were born around 20 years ago with the late Milton Glaser, the graphic designer who designed the I Love New York logo.
Back in 2006, through their work with the Art Directors Club of New York, Collins wanted to engage young designers with driving social change through their work and Glaser came up with a title for the initiative.
Collins’s Designism column sees a new outlet for these values and will also level on what it means to be a designer today, running a design business and sharing his take on industry goings on.
