In a delightful nod to the classic book, the retailer’s festive spot, created by New Commercial Arts, features a 24-foot-tall giant with oversized ears, intent on making the holiday season truly “phizz-whizzing.”

Sainsbury’s has debuted its annual Christmas ad and it’s a fantastical take on the 1982 BFG book by British author Roald Dahl.

The ad features a charming blend of real-life scenes starring a Sainsbury’s employee named Sophie, seamlessly interwoven with animated sequences of the friendly giant, bringing a touch of whimsy and warmth to this festive tale.

The opening scene features the story’s infamous ugly vegetable, a towering, knobbly, black-and-white striped snozzcumber that will evoke memories of the beloved book.

From there, the BFG and Sophie go on an adventure to make Christmas as magical as possible, thanks to Sainsbury’s.

Emma Bisley, head of campaigns at Sainsbury’s, said: “The festive season is about making wonderful memories, and we’re here to help our customers create a truly unforgettable Christmas with family and friends, especially when it comes to food.

“At Sainsbury’s, providing good food for all of us is at the heart of everything we do. We want to offer a diverse range of high-quality food products suitable for any occasion, whether customers are looking for new holiday delights or classic festive favorites, Sainsbury’s has something to satisfy every taste and budget through this year’s Christmas range,”

“Collaborating with the Roald Dahl Story Company this year was a remarkable opportunity to tap into the nostalgia and heartwarming spirit that the BFG embodies and hope that this advert captures the nation’s hearts and fills them with joy.”

Directed by Sam Brown it has a final voiceover by Stephen Fry and a bespoke soundtrack by renowned composer Alex Baranowski, recorded at Abbey Road with a 54-piece orchestra.

“The Big Friendly Giant meets the Big Friendly Grocer – two fabric of the nation brands, bringing the magic of Christmas home to families,” added Ian Heartfield, founder at New Commercial Arts.

“Our heart-warming campaign is a celebration of all things Christmas, allowing young and old to escape into a wonderful world of mouth-watering food and to enjoy the story of a special friendship.”
